Overall, I would rate this school as average. Having moved in from another state with higher standards, this particular school is just okay.
I think the staff and teachers work hard for our students, but I think things here in Texas with the whacky testing system really hampers real learning for the sake of teaching to test. So, fine, that is a big problem everywhere.
Where I think this school really fell down this year, was in the teaching of 7th grade math. This was a new program and the teachers where woefully unprepared to teach it. I've never heard or seen more complaints about a single subject than this. Were I put in this position (as an educator) I would have been extremely embarrassed. Hopefully, next year's 7th grade class will have a better experience.
Cracks in the system due to budget issues show themselves in as unintended consequences. For example, everyone knows that football is big here in Texas. But when budgets are tight what are school systems to do. Well, in the case of this school, they hired someone fresh out of college to teach one of the hardest classes (math), it appears because he can also coach football. Read that this way, it feels like they hired some who is a coach and can also teach math. Really, if you had a choice of teachers (for math no less), would your first choice be someone who has a goal of being a coach or has a goal of just being a great math teacher. Hardest class to teach due to new curriculum, no availability after school because he was coaching... just a disaster. I'm not blaming the school fully for this situation (nor the teacher, who is well liked by the students but seems less than effective to many parents). A budget is a budget, but how about putting those newbee, coaching wanna-be types in PE or Texas History (not saying that is easier to teach, just that it won't impact their ability to do algebra).
So, there you go. Great Staff (they try hard), poor execution on the math side of things (7th grade), some obvious unintended consequences with regard to staffing gets me to an average outcome.
