Everyone, teachers and students, leaves if they can. Only kids that stay are those whose parents make them stay.

This is an awesome school. The staff and faculty work beyond what is considered over time. The teachers need more support, because, just as the students do not have extra time to socialize or sit and relax and have family time, neither do the teachers, counselors, vice principal and principal. It seems that everyone is pushed to be the best and that means high testing scores. Although, I do not agree with just teaching to the test, that is how our society is run. High scoring on standardized tests that are not created for all cultures or genders is what our educational system finds important. With that being said the high scoring on tests will help them have more opportunities when it comes time to apply for college. Which they get so much help with from Rebecca Salazar. She is amazing! If they would do something to reduce the daily homework load, implement stress reducing activities during school hours, speak to the girls about the importance of managing stress and show them ways to do this, I would love the school even more. Also, more time focusing on socialization skills will also help them in college when they might have a shock when they are thrown into the wild with so many different personalities and so much freedom!! It really is an amazing school and the staff and principle really care about the students. Some of the issues others have reported might be mildly true to an extent, but, what school does not have their favorites? Some students stand out and that's how it will be when they are in their careers. They have to learn how to deal with these issues. People making out in schools is nothing new. At least thats all they were able to do and they got caught which makes me feel better about the girls being watched carefully. I am truly impressed with how much the principle does for the school and how she tries to be at all events even if just for a few minutes. That's almost impossible.

I am fed up of this school and plan to remove my child for various reasons. 1. THIS SCHOOL HAS VERY RUDE STAFF MEMBERS ESPECIALLY THE COUNSELOR'S CLERK WHO DISCOURAGES STUDENTS FROM APPLYING TO PROGRAMS OR BEHAVES RUDELY WITH THEM FOR NO REASON. 2. THERE IS LOTS OF BIAS AND FAVORITISM IN THE SCHOOL. THE SAME STUDENTS MAJORITY OF THEM BEING A STAFF MEMBER'S CHILD ALWAYS RECEIVE THE OPPORTUNITY IN THE SCHOOL. 3. THE AMOUNT OF HOMEWORK IS COMPLETELY UNREASONABLE THE STUDENTS DO NOT LEARN IN THE CLASS BUT THEY GET A LARGE AMOUNT OF HOMEWORK. THE HOMEWORK IS NOT HELPFUL AND CAUSES STRESS AMONG THE STUDENTS. 4. ONE OF MY FRIEND'S DAUGHTER SUFFERED FROM DEPRESSION BUT WHEN SHE SEEK THE STAFF'S HELP, THEY DID NOT PAY ATTENTION TO HER. I highly do not recommend this school for other parents and children.

Teacher effectiveness: Agree

A poorly run school aside from the test results which are a result of hand picking only high achieving students. Very trite, vindictive atmosphere.

Develops character: Strongly disagree

The staff support crimes of their favorite students but expel students just for wearing wrong socks or sweaters that do not have the ywla logo. Recently, 2 high schoolers were caught making out in the bathroom but they were not suspended or expelled. However, other students who wear navy blue sweaters with no YWLA logo get into trouble more than those girls. Tell me does this promote fairness?

Terrible experience for so many reasons; however, the icing on the cake happened a few weeks ago when my daughter came home with lice. Furthermore, she was allowed to return to school the next day with a head full of nits (despite my call to the school to inquire about its health regulations with lice) and she was also "encouraged" to not say anything about the lice! Indeed, no note from SAISD or the school nurse was ever sent out to parents regarding this matter. Why? Because YWLA -must- have an outstanding attendance record. Who cares about a few hundred nits or some lice or the health and well-being of the students and their families! This school is a disgrace. Utterly third-world mentality. Hideous administration and staff. Will report this incident to the Board of Education and the many other teacher-related problems to the Superintendent.

It is a petty arrogant environment that is not healthy for kids unless their home life can counter it. Administrator takes full advantage of charter status to bully teachers and students into leaving. Parents and visitors are fed a glossy, heavily orchestrated show that hides the real picture. Favorable reviews are posted by the same people that make promotional videos. It is a phony atmosphere based entirely on test scores.

Outstanding staff and the administration is great. Girls are challenged and are taught to be accountable for all assigned work. Teachers go above and beyond at this school and take great pride in student success which is why it was designated a national blue ribbon school!
