When my son was in 6th grade, I was grateful and preferred my son being segregated, for the most part, from the 7th and 8th grade students. I feel like this decreases "bullying" by older students. And, I believe that most 6th graders would rather be segregated from their upper classmen at this age. Kids can be cruel. There was an instance when my son was in 7th grade and riding the bus back from an out of town game with his football team, when a couple of the 8th grade students had to ride his bus back to the school, and, all the way from Orangefield the two 8th graders tormented my son. at the back of the bus. The next morning, I contacted the prinipal. I was livid. The principal, immediately took action. ANd, the the coaches did, too. I was pleased at the way the situation was handled. Now, he is an 8th grader. Unfortunately, the school received an unacceptable rating after the TASK scores were in. I do not know the reasons, but he has never missed more than two items on any TASK exam and didn't on these exams. There are more problems at this school than just bad administration.
Unfortunately, there are many fine teachers languishing under poor administration at this school. All academics are aimed at testing. Extracurricular activities are virtually nonexistent to the average student. Very few parents want to become involved with this school due to recurrent discipline problems between students. At this pivitol time in a child's life, this school does not provide disciplinary guidance nor a strong academic program. Do not send your child to this school.
This campus is full of great teachers. The principal has implemented so many changes to improve the school. Academics have been improved drastically. The discipline is harsh, but effective.
This middle school in my openion is severly lacking in the quality of education for its 6th graders. They are not included with the rest of the school. The six grade is segrigated out and they are not included with the rest of the school for sports, music, art. The teachers are appethetic at best about the students acedemic progress and rarely attempt to include parents. Most of my attempts to contact teacher in this school have been meet with resistance.
The middle school campus can improve a lot. It's rating is not where it should be. Classroom management needs to be greatly improved. There is little parental involvment except in extracurricular activities. Parental involvment in this area does not improve over-all student grades nor improve district campus ratings. Teacher salaries are too low compared to the surrounding districts--talent goes elsewhere and our students lose because of it. Also, this campus needs better leadership.
There is alot of racial tension in this school as well as the district. This stress has caused alot of problems that the school district turns a deaf ear to because they don't want to anger any minority group in any way.
I think this is a good school and I think the teachers are cool. Some teachers even take the time to listen to you or they try to show you attention. And I think that our support for our school is very strong we totally have the team spirit! Even though we hardly ever win football games I totally support our team! GO TIGERS! Well, I hope to learn and live my life to the fullest. Thank you SMS, What would I do without my theater arts teacher? I love SMS!
