As a student of Texas Middle School I'm unimpressed the teachers are o.k., too many administartors. The school's focus is more on athletic than a higher education. I can't wait to get out of there!
Parent involvement is key to children's success at any school. I put a son through TMS from 6th-8th grade. He had problems at first with being picked on, but all it took was a call to the principal and all was well after that. Majority of the teachers at TMS are amazing, caring, smart, innovative, youthful and energetic! I've come across unmotivated ones, but they are a handful. This school displays so much heart for students by programs such as Angel Tree that literally SHOWERS the disadvantaged students with gifts they would not otherwise receive for Christmas, and all are gifted by teachers, staff, parents and administrators; the school dances provide kids with something to look forward to; and other reward-based programs that honor those with good behavior. Security and safety are foremost in this school. Curriculum is an envy with overwhelming choices for sports and electives. A positive experience overall!
I have sent two older children through TISD but I have decided to educate my youngest elsewhere. Texas Middle School administration, overall, has a horrible attitude toward parents. I am surprised yet empowered to read others have similar things to say. I certainly wish the school board would investigate the complaints they have received from parents and teachers about the poor administration at this location.
I have been involved with TMS since 2003. My children received an adequate education the years they were in 6th and 7th grades. I felt the rigor wasn't there in the 8th grade curriculum. This was evident by academic performance at HS level a year later. I believe the teachers at this school are awesome. I met a few that I wish would have been stronger, but I was generally satisfied with their instruction. The biggest problem this campus has is too many administrators who tend to be fearful of making a stand in favor of the entire population and only cater to a few. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Parents with 'pull' tend to call the shots and students and teachers are left to deal with it. Overall, this is a typical urban, inner city campus with problems typical of that type of atmosphere.
As a very involved parent of a TMS student I can attest to the fact the school is not parent friendly. The teachers do their very best, however, they have no support from administration. The current administration is a disaster and so much worse than in previous years. I have an older daughter who attended TMS several years ago. All you have to do is walk in the front door into the office and you'll find you're an intruder.
TMS is a good school, My son really enjoys the different classes availible, plenty of sports options, every thing from football to golf. With ref. to parent involvement, if all you do is drop your kid off at the curb and pick them up at the end of the day, then how can you expect more for them? I have found that in any school your child attends that parents have to be a part of their childs education by 'knowing' what they are doing and how well they are doing in school. Many of these comments are folks that had a problem, but until then they probably never knew the teachers or staff that their child is with each day. You get out of it what you put into it. Get involved in your kids life, not just after school.
It's a large urban school with no interaction with parents whatsoever. Chaos seems to be the best way to describe this school.
Great teachers but horrible administrators! Their bullying policy is a joke. The principal believes the school has 'more rights to students than parents.' We're lucky and headed to Trinity next school year.
My 7th grader switched from PG to TMS this year - going back to TMS next - the curriculum is dumbed down (including AP) - fights on campus - arrogant condescending principal & staff - parent involvement is given lip-service but really not welcomed - zero tolerance policies in place to keep down the disciplinary problems - campus police seem to be there primarily as enforcers for staff, not assisting you or your child uf a problem arises - if your child is a disciplinary problem & happens to need this type of prison atmosphere then might be a good school for them - otherwise....
The academic levels are excellent. We came here as a result of Hurricane Katrina and was met by a school employee and envcouraged me to register my child at TMS. And it has been the most pleasant of experiences both academically and professionally. I thank God for TMS and its staff.
