Lehi School

I have one child in 1st grade and another in 6th grade. The 1st grade teacher doesn't seem to understand basic grammar or how to spell properly. The 6th grade teacher is not fair with the way she treats the children. There is one child who is a serious trouble-maker, but he gets away with it and even gets to participate in the activities all the other kids must work hard to earn. Kids were not allowed to get a drink of water all day once, except for at recess. Problem is, the line for the drinking fountain was so long, not all kids got a chance to get a drink. There is no drinking fountain outside, so they only had a few minutes while going out or coming in. The new principal is just as bad. . Children are not allowed to leave the school at the end of the day through the main front doors. They get a pink slip if they do. The principal also increased the length of lunch time and decreased the length of recess to accommodate the few kids who took too long to eat their lunch. The kids must use a tennis racket and tennis ball to play softball. They are also not allowed to go on the hill during recess, all because of "safety". Oh, please.

I have one child in 2nd grade here. I've served on the PTA board and as a room mom for 3 years. My son's teachers have been awesome and his grades are great, but the school as a whole has problems. Our CRT score average for 2010 was in the 70s. The school is the oldest in the district and floods every year, presenting a safety hazard. Only part of the school was remodeled/added on to a few years ago; the rest is not earthquake-ready. The low test scores etc. prevent needed funding from coming to the school. Except for a core group of dedicated parents, there seems to be a general attitude of complaisance towards the school's problems. Hopefully, the new principal will turn things around, but she has an uphill battle ahead of her.

There is a new principle and she's wonderful! I have one in Third, and one in Kinder, and both teachers are wonderful. They're all about positive discipline and helping the kids grow and learn. The teachers aren't afraid to ask for help from the parents when needed and are on top of things. I'm very happy I've enrolled my children here, especially after being hesitant with old reviews here while researching the school.

Lehi Elementary has a great reading program. They do dad's and doughnuts where the kids come in and read to the dads for about 45 min. All of my kids and grand kids read very well because of the reading programs the school has.

There is a general 'basics' to this school and there is no room to excel for the kids who are further ahead than their grade level. Class is taught to the lowest level. There is an extreme frustration between the teachers, parents and principal because of this-teachers want more advanced textbooks, etc and are being denied. As parents we are told there is nothing anyone can do. The friction between teachers, principal and district policy seems obvious. Students who excel do not have opportunity to do so until 5th grade when they can apply for A.L.L (accelerated learning lab) and go to another school for 5th and 6th grade. There are no extra curricular activities offered except for choir. They just did a complete remodel, however and have added several more classrooms. It looks beautiful and has made a big difference in the appearance of the school.

They are using Investigations as the primary math program; a math program intended to supplement the basics - this is used in the stead of the basics. Parental concern and negative feedback have not swayed the Alpine School District in this decision, nor several of the elementary schools within it. Children performing above grade level are not allowed to excel-the emphasis is on equalizing, to bring children down that are high performers, and to bring those up that are low. The latter is wonderful, the former - a tragedy. If you are at all involved in your child's education, you might want to join in the grassroots movement to start charter schools - but don't expect it to be easy. Otherwise, private or homeschooling is the best option for this area.
