We moved to Stowe and had our children join the Elementary school and at first we thought the school was excellent. The school is excellent; it is the children that go there that are not. There is Physical and Verbal bullying everyday and the teachers seem to turn a blind eye due to the teachers being scared of the bullying children parents or that the parents are on the school board. The school say s it does have an unusual approach to bullying but in the end the bullies carry on being bullies. The school is ok if you are the top jock of the school but anyone else is left behind or made to feel inadequate and if your face does not fit in the local people hound you out of town. I have seen many good families move on from Stowe because of the local children. If you have few million dollars then the school will welcome you but if you are an average family then find somewhere else to go to school.
We moved our kids here from Westchester County, NY two years ago and had feared a step down in the quality of their education-but to the contrary this school exceeds the one we left behind. It is a safe, cozy and caring school for young children, with fantastic teachers and staff. Extra opportunities are provided by a dedicated enrichment teacher and superb art and choral music instruction, a school paper, etc. Unfortunately, the school lost its foreign language program last year and faces a tough road ahead due to the punitive tax structure on 'gold towns' like Stowe-our property taxes rose 42% last year and many families have left/are leaving as a result. School budgets have thus come under even more pressure. But the community loves its schools and will do whatever it can to keep the quality high.
I have 3 children in this school now and fear the future of the school. This school used to be all about the children and their education. I now feel that it is turning into a political who knows who. Unless this school changes its outlook on how to teach our children to feel safe among each other and safe among adults, this school is going to flounder.
Stowe Elementary School provides an excellent education for students. I highly recommend this school and community for children whose parents are seeking a quality education. The school benefits from a high level of community support and parent involvement. There are traditional single grade classrooms as well as multi-age classrooms. This school meets the needs of all students, including those with special needs. Furthermore, there is an enrichment program for students who benefit from additional challenges beyond the regular classroom. Special area subjects include foreign language, art, music, library, and physical education. Students have the opportunity to participate in additional curricular activities such as a student newspaper, student council, band, and chorus. There are many forms of communication including weekly newsletters, parent/teacher conferences, and a standards based report card. Our child is presently attending Stowe Elementary School. She has many friends, and likes her teachers. This school provides many opportunities for her to succeed at an extremely high level within all areas of the curriculum.
