Teacher effectiveness: Very effective

My son had just finish his first grade with Mrs. Hall. I love how the teachers have gone out of their way to help your kids at Arcola. They will let you know right away if something unusual happen in the school in and outside of the classroom. They are big in training my son to deal with bullying while helping him excel with his academic. During his kindergarden year, Mrs Forcade had separated my son along with a few others in the class during their reading time so they could do more challenging asignments. Mrs. Hall had gone to the local library to borrow series books to introduce them to my son toward the end of his first grade. He is now a happy camper reading all kinds of books :-)) I love a tight connect between teachers and parents, they are willing to listen and adjust accordingly to help your kids. The people in the neighborhood are very close. The movement the school sends out the class asignments, our IMs, emails and phones start working non-stop and by the end of the day, everyone knows who will be in the same class with who. It is such a small community that my son have the same friends riding the bus, doing cub scout, and joining the swim team with him. He knows many friends, teachers and parents in the neighborhood that make him feel very comfortable at school or while doing different activities. Arcola is not just a school, it is part of our community, where everyone blends in. Strongly recommend!!!

We moved from a different school in Loudoun County to Arcola Elementary and we could not be happier! The level of organization that this school has displayed has amazed us. The teachers are excellent and the principal and assistant principal are exceptional. The PTA is engaging and very active. This is a school that will rize to be one of the top elementary schools in Loudoun county.

We are so lucky to have our kids at this school! I hear the restrictions other schools put on parents and their involvement in the classroom, but Arcola is the opposite of this. They love to have parental involvement. The staff is warm and welcoming and we have loved all of the teachers for our 3 kids. Sad to leave this great school when our kids go onto middle school. Go Dragons!

We have been going to Arcola for the past 6 years and have not been happy. The front office staff can be rude and unwelcoming. There is too much politics and favoritism going on at the school, and this starts with the principal. A couple of years ago we had our child evaluated for Autism/HFA, Asperger's Syndrome, and we had to pull teeth to get anything done. Some of the teachers are young and inexperienced with Special Ed and could use a lot more training. It isn't always just a behavioral problem. Not many teachers and staff have been willing to take the time to understand our son and help him through his troubles. Except a few: Mrs. Hess, Mrs. Barbic, Ms. Bruley, Mrs. Parziale and Ms. Dailsey. They have been wonderful with us and our son. They claim NO BULLY zone, but when it happens over and over they don't do much about it. The counselor could use some work. There is too much emphasis on getting good grades and being perfect instead of letting the kids make mistakes and learning from them. A lot of pressure put on the kids from teachers and administrators. Kids should be kids. PTA parents are too intertwined with the teachers and admin staff which leads to favoritism.

Anyone who has been to this school during school hours, during events, or on fieldtrips is struck by how happy the kids are. The school has a great energy that can be traced directly to the teachers and staff. They clearly love working with the kids and the students respond to that.

Student to Teacher ratio is too high. I felt that some of the teaching staff was a little too inexperienced with special needs (ADHD). When they insist it's a behavioral problem, and three separate PHD's state it's a "textbook" case of ADHD, that's a problem. Office staff could use a little training in "people skills". Children did not like this school, we sold our home and moved because of their experience. Great neighborhood....School leaves something to be desired.

We love Arcola! Our experience there has been very positive. Dr. Bowers and the teaching team has exceeded our expectations. We find it to be a very caring environment. They make learning fun and they also teach and incorporate respect, kindness, honesty and compassion.

The faculty and staff is excellent...a very kind and nurturing environment. My daughter is in first grade and it has been a great experience so far. The school encourages parent participation and I always feel welcomed. The teachers engage students in fun and creative ways.

We have been at Arcola Elementary in one way or another for the past 6 years. My children have good to great teachers. Not every teacher is going to be right for you child but they have done a good job placing my kids with the right teacher for them. I like the administration, they are friendly, approachable and know the students. Overall I may not agree with every decision, but I do believe every decision is done with the students interest at heart. The teachers love working at Arcola and that creates positive teachers and a positive environment. Teachers want to teach at Arcola and that means something to me as a parent. The front office can seem 'hard' at first but actually are a very caring group. I find it no different than other front office staff I've interacted with at other schools in our area. Based on what I've heard from friends at other schools, I think Arcola is fantastic and would not move to attend the other schools in Dulles South.

Great school and wonderful teachers and staff. The school provides many fun activities. My children have thrived in the environment and find it a safe place. The teachers are highly qualified and receptive to questions. My children's teachers have all been loving, caring and enthusiastic! Love Arcola!

The office staff of the school is rude and unfriendly. The school does not place enough emphasis on educational achievement. Leadership is happy with the status quo. Most quality after school activities are no longer offered. On a positive note most of the teachers are great.

My children have been attending Arcola Elementary since the fall of 2010 and I have been nothing but pleased with my experience. Having attended public school in Fairfax County as a child myself, I know what high standards are expected of Northern Virginia schools and hold Arcola Elementary to those same standards. Arcola's principal is the best principal I have ever encountered and clearly adores our children and wants nothing but the absolute best for them. The PTA is extremely active and working to bring every amenity possible to our children to promote their education and well-being. I have experienced 6 teachers so far and my expectations have been exceeded by 5 of them. The front office staff are hard working and clearly help make that school "hum". I am proud to be a parent of 2 Arcola Elementary school students, and look forward to when my 3rd attends in a few years!

My daughter has been at Arcola for 2 years now. I have had nothing but positive experiences with teachers and staff at this school. My daughter is in first grade now and I am able to volunteer in her classroom weekly. I feel that the home/school connection at this school is great! The school itself is bright and clean and humming with positive energy. It is just the type of environment that you want your child to be a part of to nurture his/her education.

Mrs. St. Onge is a fantastic Kindergarten teacher. I have nothing but the best things to say about her, the other teachers I have interacted with and the principal. The front office could use a few lesson in customer service.

Arcola, rating of a 7 is about right. What brings this school down is the office staff. I have read most of the reviews for this school and it appears the majority have or are having the same negative experience with the office staff. One parent compared them to a DMV or post office worker, and I concur. My children's teachers have been great so far. The principal appears to be still learning the job. The music teacher does a very good job teaching, just don't ask her to sing. It is equivalent to scratching a chalkboard. That bus ride was painful. Somebody had to say it.

We have been at Arcola since it opened and have 3 kids at the school. We have been very pleased with the school and have always felt that we can talk to staff/teachers. We have also been actively involved in the school and have reached out to the teachers to help often. We realize that educating our kids is a team effort and we support the staff in their mission to educate our kids.

Love this school. My kids have been taught in very creative and interactive ways. Staff is friendly, communicative and welcoming. We have yet to have a bad teacher--not only do some teachers email about things going on, some teachers just every so often pictures of activities your child completed in school that day. Very happy about amount of homework. I feel very at home when I walk in the door.

As with most schools, there are strengths and weaknesses. The principal and counselor seem to be good at playing politics to avoid major upsets from parents, but the follow-through is lacking. For example, one teacher continues to armchair diagnose children in her class and call parents at odd hours and speak negatively about their child and discuss her own personal issues even though we were assured by admin that it would be addressed. This was two years ago and I know of several parents who are currently having the same issue. It's unfortunate because it continues to hurt families. Conversely, my child had an AMAZING second grade teacher in Mrs. Owings. If I could create the perfect teacher, it would be her! There are definitely some other great teachers there as well. The front office staff seems unhappy...not greeting entrants to the office or, doing so in a gruff and annoyed manner. They are the first impression of the school and they leave visitors feeling unwelcome and disrespected. Another issue that continues even though I and other parents have notified the school through the survey. Our experiences with Arcola have been hit or miss...here's hoping yours are all "hits".

I can not say enough about ARCOLA ELEMENTARY and its ADMINISTRATION (Mr Jaques & Dr Bowers) and teachers (resource teachers in particular) I have a Kindergartener with special needs. Anyone who has a child with special needs knows that you have to fight SO HARD for anything that will benefit your child, or so I thought. At Arcola Elementary, the administration, the therapists and the teachers all work together with your childs best interest as the goal. I am almost dumfounded, it is such an incredibly supportive, positive place to watch my child thrive. I have two older children in college and I have never been a part of such a school. A school that puts so much energy, time and effort into my childs well-being. Huge praise again for the incredible people who run this particular school. It is a jewel because of their efforts. Thank you thank you thank you

Very pleased with Arcola Elementary school! I have bee a parent at Arcola for two years and we have been very pleased with our experience. The Kindergarten team was top notch....the amount of planning and time that these teachers dedicated to their students is commendable. We received weekly assessment results, which allowed us to support our child at home, and most importantly helped the teacher focus their instruction. These teachers do not do the same old thing year after year- they address the needs of their students as well as help the students meet the standards of the curriculum. Our child's teacher was also extremely supportive with our needs, she met with us after school and responded to many emails we flooded her with. She was a true partner with us in educating our child! Our experience in first grade thus far has been excellent. The first grade teachers are a true TEAM, which is incredibly helpful for new and tenured teachers-new and fresh strategies are introduced while proven strategies are utilized. The amount of volunteering that occurs in the first grade classrooms is also commendable, these teachers encourage parent involvement, which is so important!

My child has had a great experience at Arcola. He is now a second grader who reads above his grade level. The credit for this is totally attributed to the great instruction he's received at this school. Administrators are engaged and leading in a positive manner. The parental involvement is exceptional.

LOVE THIS SCHOOL! I have 2 children that attend Arcola. From day 1 I have been impressed with the administration and staff. Every teacher my children have had has been great! My kids love school and I credit that to the teachers. Dr. Bowers is a great Principal that has a genuine love, care and concern for each of the children. In fact, when my oldest was in K he had a medical emergency at school. He had an illness that required him to be hospitalized. Dr. Bowers called every day; his teacher sent balloons to the hospital and brought dinner to my family. This is not something in their "job descriptions", this is true care and concern for a child. My children are challenged with the work but never complain. They love it! Great afterschool enrichment programs too! Lots of involved parents!!! Can t say enough great things about Arcola!

Children are not challenged enough. Teachers and princial do not want to work with parents. Favouritism & partiality are the also key factors. Hence absence of truth and justice.

In 2009, SOL scores were down almost across the board in third, fourth, and fith grades compared to 2008. For 2009, Arcola was below the county average in most SOL test categories for all three grades. It was by far the lowest-scoring in SOLs of the schools in its immediate area (Aldie, Arcola, Pinebrook, and Little River -- no 2009 data were available for Liberty). It's true that an 'it's all good,' rah-rah spirit comes from the principal and administration, but beyond that, real discipline is lacking. Bullying is still a problem according to quite a few parents, and it's not uncommon when visiting the school to see students roam the halls without passes. If you have an excellent student, mabe the test scores don't bother you. But it's a sign that more could be done academically compared schools with similar make-ups.

I have two kids in Arcola and I have been very satisfied. It is a brand new beautiful school. My kids are challenged with above grade level math and reading assignments based on their demonstrated abilities. Lots of after school programs were put in place this year (legos, science, baking, art, etc). Some lower reviews in 2008 may reflect the fact that it was the first year open and programs were still ramping up. There is some variation in teacher talent but that is true at any school. I have been happy with my children's teachers and the PTA is outstanding.

We were redistricted into Arcola. Compared to our child's old school, Arcola is not good. Throughout the year we had real problems in our grade which weren't taken seriously. I talked to many parents over the year to see if we were unique. We weren't. Teacher quality seems to be hit or miss within and across grades. Parents need to be diligent about what is going on. Assuming all is good and not paying attention will make a child's progression through this school a crap shoot. Dr. Bowers is very much a cheerleader who tends to talk a lot without saying anything. All is good at Arcola for him. He does not inspire confidence. Unless he takes off his rose-colored glasses, it's hard to believe the overall quality of this school will improve.

My son's teacher is excellent, front office staff, not always friendly but improving. Administration could defintely be more parent friendly. Teachers within grade levels are not consistent (i.e. one 4th grade teacher sends home coloring pages while another sends home study sheets comparable to high school level) Unfortunately, students are taught to the SOL and pretty much nothing beyond that. Special needs/ talents along with different learning styles are not recognized. PTA is great and fund raising is within reason.

Arcola is finishing it's first year of being open and we have been very pleased. Both of my kids' teachers have been fantastic. Dr. Bowers and Mr. Jacques run a tight (but fun!) ship and have both done a wonderful job with a brand new school. My kids are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to learning - one is very advanced and the other struggles a lot. Both have gotten attention that focus on their needs. The only thing lacking at this school is a playground, but since the county doesn't build those, it's up to the parents to raise funds to have it built. Hopefully next year!
