We have been thrilled with this school for both of my children. My older son had an IEP and I was impressed with how organized and attentive the staff was (he no longer has an IEP currently). The schol has a small town school feel in a big metro area. The office staff is friendly as are the administration and teachers and school spirit abounds. I'm very pleased with the education my children are receiving.
Hayfield is a great school with wonderful teachers who cares and works hard to help your children, develop into great, productive and successful individuals in society.
I volunteer at this school and I find the school to be very exicited in it staff and also with the students. The school has many new on-line programs from IXL math, myown reading and also e-books. Great staff and great environment.
Don't be fooled by the score this school received. Yes, it looks great on paper, but that's about it. If you are concerned with your child getting a good education this is not the school for you. They are obsessed with testing; pre-tests, tests, standardized tests. I'm not sure when they actually teach, or how much time they actually devote to teaching versus preparing for the next test. They don't seem to want to help kids who have learning difficulties. Instead they just keep passing them along to the next grade. I'm sure there are some good teachers at this school. Unfortunately, out of the 4 teachers my kids have had only 1 was good. We've been in constant contact with the teachers and haven't gotten anywhere. Have even had meetings with the Assistant Principal, only to have it dumped back in our lap to deal with. But if your child fits nicely into the mold of the ideal public school student you'll be fine.
Hayfield Elem has provided the perfect environment for my sons. They made a lot of great friends (we're military). The whole community is so welcoming, but most important THIS school's faculty seems to put more time and effort with "sincerity" into the students and parents. It definitely shows in VA standard testing-ALL grade levels(3-6grd) passed well "above" the "state average". I'm really concerned with English/Reading which they scored over 90% (avg 80+%) and Math which they score above the State average consistently. I love that this school is NOT overcrowded. The principal is so actively involved. I always know what's going on via email and voice recordings. I like volunteering and was surprised at the huge volunteer appreciation party that the faculty put together for all volunteers. This is a GREAT school and I'm so glad we're a part of it!
Hayfield has some great teachers. I do believe that they do not provide enough help for the students that need it. Most of the time the school is a safe and happy environment. However in the 2010-2011 school year their was a fight in the classroom. Most of the test scores are average at best. I find many students to not read enough or only reading material suitable for 2nd or 3rd graders. Plenty of the students turn their projects in late or never. Along with that this comment made by a fellow student shocked me. "My mom said I have to get a C on my science project." These students are only trying to cruise through their homework instead of striving to learn and do better. They are not interested in enjoying their time learning. I find this school to be average and lacking spirit in the education department.
Last year ,too much regression I felt in number of educative fields when testing and comparing my son with other of his age .
I dont know about general education. My son is diagnosed with high functioning autism. This is the best school if you have a high functioning student. They have a whole day inclusion with co teaching method. This helped wonderfully (only for HFA)for my son. he is picking up speech from his typical peers and no problems with acadamics as special education teacher is in the class room all the time.
Students receive great overall education at Hayfield; the whole school system including staff and PTA are wonderful and supportive of all the children.
i love this school. the teachers are great and all my friends are there and i wouldnt go to anyother skool
2006/07 was my son's first year at Hayfield and he had a terrific experience. His teacher, Miss McMullin - first grade, engaged the kids to make learning fun. The school promotes safety and social responsibility and the parents are involved in school activities. We are looking forward to second grade!
In honor of Teacher Appreciation Day, I thought I'd write a bit about our son's teacher and the school! Mrs. VanHorn (3rd) has been wonderful. Our son has learned so much, and this is our first experience with a public school. We are new to the area, and we specifically chose this neighborhood to move into so that he could attend Hayfield. The staff is helpful and nice, kids are great, and there's always activities for them. Safety is a priority, and I feel they really care about the kids. The school is on the small side, which I think really makes a difference. Many of the kids live in the neighborhood, so it has that small-town feel to it, but the education is top-notch. We couldn't be happier!
We were new to Hayfield this year and have been very impressed by the teachers, reading instructors, specialty teachers and the leadership of the principal and staff. My son and others new to the school this year made an easy transition to a new school due in large part to his teacher Mrs Van Horn (aka Ms Casey). She is terrific. Each grade does something special..the Third Graders do Mighty Minds Play to make getting ready for SOL testing a less stressful experience. My son has benefited from the gifted and talented programs and has made a lot of friends. parent involvement is great. I highly recommend this school.
We love this school! We are a military family and have moved for our first time. Because of this we thought our daughter would have a difficult time adjusting to a new school. Her third grade teacher, Ms. Casey, made the transition very smooth starting from the 'Open House'. The first day of school I dropped off a very anxious little girl who wanted to move back home, but I picked up a confident young lady who wanted to walk home with her new friend (thanks to Ms.Casey. Parent involvement is super, staff and faculty are professional and supportive. My daughter is being educated in safe and loving environment. School to Home communication is great. Special Area subjects follow the standards for the State and collaborate with homeroom teachers for special themes . Awesome school! As a mother and a National Board certified Teacher,I HIGHLY recommend this school.
Super school! Teachers are wonderful and go the extra mile. Parent volunteering is abundant. Academics are strong except for the kindergarten program. The second grade and third grade teachers are super! Reading is very strong.
We are new this year. The office staff and teachers take a lot of pride in the school and honestly care about the children. We love the orchestra, and the news program. My daughter got great experience taking part in that and my 3rd grader has adjusted very well to the curriculum as well. Having come from a really dynamic school before, there are some things that I find lacking. There isn't much emphasis on school spirit. Folders go home on Thursday rather than monday which I find frustrating. I like the news fresh for the upcoming week. It helps keep our calendar up to date. I also do not like the lunch schedule. We were at a larger school and they somehow accomdated everyone in a shorter time and still started at 11:00. My 3rd grader has lunch at 10:00 roughly. Overall it's a great school and I recommend it!
My child has developmental delay and Hayfield has provided an occupational therapist to help with his handwriting and a speach therapist and a special ed teacher in his regular class room setting (with not delayed students). They provide outstanding educational environment.
The teachers and this schools have changed our lives. My daughter was having social problems and was in the principal's office a lot. With the help of the teachers and counsellors, she was a super star student and didn't visit the principal once this year. She's involved in music and is always talking about the outstanding classes she has. She is excited to go to school every day and has now been invited to join the Gifted and Talented Program for five different subject. Terrific School. Even better Teachers.
Hayfield has been wonderful addressing my child's reading disability and providing extra help to her for that. The school has excellent social activities throughout the year to give the children an opportunity to socialize and relax, such as luaus, dances and skate nights. The school is very encouraging to students and the are great.
If your child requires no additional services, you will be fine. If your child has a Learning Disablility, good luck. The administration dismisses parental concerns. If your child needs extra support, be prepared to hire advocates, otherwise you will be told ,' that you can not accept your child as he is, that he is learning on his own graph.' And given no extra help.Better off homeschooling. Good luck.
