I think Cora Kelly is a hidden gem in the ACPS elementary system. Not surprisingly, as the district's only Science, Technology, Math & Engineering focus school, CK boasts science and math test scores that are among the highest in the ACPS system. Kids have a chance to go to science lab from the time they are in kindergarten and the science teachers are very experienced, wonderful teachers beloved by the kids. The school works hard to provide differentiated learning to ensure kids at all levels get the instruction they need. An annual science fair helps the kids strut their stuff for the community. The school has recently had an influx of new, young, energetic teachers at a variety of grade levels as well as a new principal and vice principal who are strongly devoted to improving student performance. CK is definitely a school on the rise.

I can't believe a teacher would post that review, but here's mine: teachers are very strong, and committed to the students. The school is energized about its STEM core, and after last year's transition to new administration, newly energized with a strong focus on kid performance. I am excited that my kid goes there. Science, math, technology, engineering -- getting kids comfortable with STEM now will help us all later.

Poor teachers. Pathetic community support. Numerous behavior problems. Weak administration. Teachers teach to tests, but students still barely pass. Would not ever willingly put my child in a school like this.

I am a parent of two children who have attended Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology. My youngest is in the 4th grade there. I cannot emphasize enough how good my children's experiences have been: the classes are tiny (6 in my son's gifted math class!), the labs are truly fantastic (Primary and Intermediate Science labs with full-time teachers and aides, Primary and Intermediate Math labs with full-time teachers and aides, computer lab starting at 2nd grade with full-time teacher and aide, Habitat Garden +staff)and the teachers are caring, young, energetic and responsive. Art, PE and music are extremely well-taught. The Principal and A.P are charismatic and smart, and the curriculum is the most progressive I have seen. CK was the first 'magnet' school in N.Va. and they know how to handle racial and economic diversity...this multicultural exposure is a free bonus for the students...CoraKelly is most highly recommended.
