This is truly a great school! The teachers and staff are top-notch, and really seem to care about the students. The principal is always visible and accessible. He goes out of his way to interact with the children and make them feel special. Children's work adorns the bulletin boards and walls throughout the school. It is a warm and welcoming place, and volunteers are made to feel appreciated. I only wish all schools were like Butts Road Primary!!
We just moved here from Georgia. We loved our school in GA and didn't think we could find another to even come close in quality, friendliness, parent involvement, etc. We have found it's match in Butts Road Primary. This school is fabulous. It has welcomed our family with open arms. The principal, Mr. Lewter, is outstanding and innovative! He's very accessable and everyone at the front office is so helpful. We are just thrilled!
Both of my children attended and we will miss it. Clean, organized, safe, fantastic teachers and a tremendous amount of support from parents.
When relocating to the Hampton Roads area our realtor strongly suggested the Hickory school district. We stretched our budget to find a home in this expensive area .. but the realtor was right. It was the best decision we made. The School system is wonderful. The other parents, the students, the teachers, the principal .. all amazing. We couldn't be happier.
My children have been fortunate to have great teachers at BRP. However, other parents have voiced dissatisfaction with some of the other teachers. A majority of the teachers are fine. The curriculum seems challenging. There is a lot of emphasis on reading and writing. My children love the enrichment programs such as music, computer lab, and library time. As a preschooler, my youngest son attended speech therapy at this school. I know that speech therapy is offered to BRP students who need it. Also, this school has awesome parent involvement. The Hawks Booster Club and the PTA really augment the school offerings by hosting special family nights and evening festivals and programs. My only complaints about the school are twofold. First, the facilities are tired and outdated. They did upgrade to more power efficient lighting last year, but the rest of the building needs updating. Second, this area of Chesapeake is experiencing a housing boom, and it seems that the class sizes are growing. They are not crazy big yet, but if the trend continues and Chesapeake doesn't build a new elementary school in the near future, I see crowded classrooms and many more trailers in BRPs future.
Over all its a really good school as long as your child is not special needs. For what it lacks in leaving no child behind from an administrative process, there are great teachers who are highly devoted to the children. If your child is special needs, you might want to consider an alternative or become an expert at the IEP process. Although we have not had an optimal experience, many of the children do. In writing a fair review, I think the issues we have encountered are nation wide. The advertised ratios are also not correct by any means but that is because there has been a huge housing boom.
I've had 2 kids go through BRP and the resources dedicated to getting students up to the very high standards are amazing. My kids were both 6 months behind when we moved from a 'good' school district in Illinois... In less than 2 years, with a lot of extra BRP help (I was deployed for a year of it!) both are performing above grade level here.
BRP is a great school with great teachers and wonderful students. I used greatschools.org when researching our options at the beginning of the school year. I don't regret making BRP our choice, but you should be aware that the 'numbers' are deceiving. The student/teacher ratio is MUCH higher than 17. There are 23-24 students in the classes I am aware of. With budget cuts, it is likely that the number will increase. The staff members are very caring, all but the lunchroom staff. They do not treat the students with respect.
I love the teachers and staff. The teachers make learning a fun and interactive adventure. My daughter's teacher has taken time out of her busy schedule to call and check up on concerns that I've had. My daughter receives supplimental learning, and the teacher has followed up so many times and has made helpful suggestions. This is a great school!
BRP is a K-2 school. My family has had a student in each grade and all their teacher's were wonderful. There is a preschool program for those who need a headstart. Their faculty and staff are very good. They have art, PE classes, recess, music and library classes -- where other schools have cut backon these programs. The 2nd graders and 1st grade classes have two musical shows a year for the parents. The PE teaches beyond the normal physed activities, teaching the students about their muscles and bones. The library has over 13,000 books. The librarian enhances what the teachers are teaching using the material in the library. There are several field trips throughout the year for each grade. The PTA membership continues to be at 100%. PTA and the Booster club sponsor several special programs throughout the year, including a magic show and holiday party. Highly recommend the school.
I loved the teachers and staff at BRP. School does a good job informing parents and asking for our participation. My child had a wonderful experience, great job making learning fun.
I moved to this area because I heard that the hickory school district was the best in the area. Actually, the tests scores are some of the best in the area but that may have little to do with the quality of the schools. This area is mostly an upper mid-class and higher area so test scores are naturally higher. In addition, the school really stresses holding kids back in kindergarden and first grade. There are no real school programs such as school plays, etc. The teacher/child ratio is extremely high. Plus, the principal is completely unresponsive to parent concerns. I felt like I was talking to a brick wall when I had concern to speak with her about. Some teachers have been excellent, yet others very poor which you will probably find anywhere. I think the school is okay but not as good as the test scores seem to indicate.
Love the fact that this schools is K-2 and then you move up to the next school. 100% PTA involvement - when parents are involved you know a school is good. Art, music, and all the academics. We are very pleased with this school and the school district.
We are extremely happy with this school! It's really nice to have a school with only K-2 and worth the hassle of having kids in multiple schools if you have older kids too. This is such a warm, sweet, nurturing place for our children. I LOVE the teachers, the administration and the values my son is learning here. There are lots of opportunities to be involved in the community, to take field trips and to participate in charity projects. We have found the school administrators to be extremely responsive to any and all of our concerns about our child. And it's academically challenging! Be sure to ask about their Handwriting Without Tears program, which is phenomenal!
BRP is an excellent school. My three children have all attended BRP and have had excellent teachers who have fostered a love of learning. The environment of the school nurtures each student to achieve all that they are capable. My childern have left the school well prepared and have excelled in their years after BRP. I credit BRP for giving them a solid foundation!
We moved here because we heard the school district was great. However, we have had nothing but problems from the faculty and school itself. The classes are too crowded and there are no resources available for students that need additional help. I thought that Bush passed a law that no child would be left behind...well I guess that this school has not heard about it. We are currently looking for a new house out of this district and in the mean time my children will be attending private school.
B R P is a great school! We moved to this part of Chesapeake for the schools. The faculty and staff really cares about the kids and the parent involvement is outstanding. The building is older but well maintained. Both of my children have gotten a high quality education here.
