My daughter had Mrs. Witt in kindergarten. She absolutely loves Mrs. Witt! All the staff are very friendly and helpful. Southside is truly a big family. As a parent I always felt at home at Southside. I know that my daughter always felt at home there as well. The school always kept us well-informed which is really important to me.

My daughter came to Southside behind in math and reading. She left last year on level in reading and advanced in math! I think her teacher and the reading staff at Southside really went out of their way for my child. Excellent school!

Southside Elementary is great learning environment for any child! The teachers and staff there are very loving and nurturing. Southside is like a big family. Everyone wears a smile. The teachers and staff strive to teach the students respect, responsibility and other characteristic traits. The parent involvement is outstanding! Southside looks after the well-being of each and every student in the school. The children get incentives for perfect attendance each month as well as other things they do well. The only negative thing that I will add is that there is too much homework. My child has no time to relax and enjoy any 'free time'. She gets off of the bus, does homework until dinner, finishes her homework, bathes, and it's bedtime.

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Virginia used the Standards of Learning (SOL) tests to assess students in reading and math in grades 3 through 8, writing in grades 5 and 8, and science in grades in 3, 5 and 8. The SOL tests are standards-based, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Virginia. The goal is for all students to pass the tests.
