We have been very happy with Potomac HS. The new principal and recent renovations have made all the difference. The Cambridge Programme is a challenging program that prepares students for college much better than the traditional method of teaching. So happy our son is a student here!
The New Principal Is Just Fantastic , It's Just the teachers that don't do a great job at potomac and that really upsets me that the teachers do not do their job .
My child has attended this school all 4 years. He has done well with his SOL's and SAT's. This is what matters most to me when selecting a school. They have prepared him well. His teachers have held him to high standards and he has taken some tough classes. Teachers are helpful, but I did much emailing and had to use School Fusion to keep up. The new principal has brought excitment to the Potomac program. He clearly is involved with the students, attends games and activities. The renovations have also contributed to brought excitment. His counselor is good, but again, I had to communicate with them. Front office personnel is ok. Not the friendliest, but ok. Sports program is excellent. Safe school. The students are kind and respectful. It's not a perfect school, but it has been a great experience for my kid.
Excellent administration, excellent renovations, and more excellence to come. Classrooms are engaging, excellent extra-curricular offerings, high quality performing arts and sports programs... something for everyone! There's a place for every student at Potomac, and it's an exciting place to be! The faculty and staff feel more like a family, and much emphasis is given to the student. It's a smaller PWC school, so students are given more individual attention than they would receive in a larger school. The principal is VERY communicative, with very high standards for students and staff. Please do not hesitate to send your student here!
I was told when I moved to the area that this school was bad but I underestimated the level. This is one of the worst school environment that I have ever encountered. The students are rude, irresponsible and unexcited about learning. From my observation, the teachers just go with the flow which makes the place a worst learning environment for a kid that actually wants to learn.
As a current student in the my mid-career of high school, Potomac High School is much better than what I heard it was. With the renovations and new administration, the school is a much better place to be. Also, they have something called Cambridge program which puts me in harder classes and challenges your knowledge. I like it because my counselor says it'll help with college applications.
As a previous student of this school, I loved my time there. My guidance councelor was great and attentive, the school nurse knew me and understood what to do when I was sent there (I have asthma) and my teachers were overall excellent. The music department teachers were all incredible, caring but no-nonsense, so choir was like an actual class, not an 'easy A' as it was in other schools I've attended.
I have two children that graduated from Potomac High. I never had any problems and neither did my kids
Potomac High School has made such great strides over the past 10 years that it is unfair to compare it to its past. SOL scores are in the upper 80's to low 90's, the athletic coaches are among the best in Prince William County, teachers are among the most caring I have ever encountered, athletic teams are competitive or dominating in spite of the fact that the school is Division 5 competing with Division 6 schools, and the new administration (principal) has been embraced by the students and faculty. The only thing lacking (as always) is community and parental support. As someone else said, 'This is the best kept secret in Prince William County'. As a former high school administrator and college professor with 37 years of experience in education, I fully endorse Potomac High School in Dumfries, Virginia.
My son and daughter attend the school and i am pleased with it, it all depends on the student and the parents working with the teachers. My son he is a junior, and my daughter is freshman, they have cambridge program which i tried to let my son particpate, it requires commitment from the student. Overall i say it is a good school
I am a current sophmore at potomac and have been attending for 2yrs. Potomac is an okay school, nothing special, and thats the thing...we have a nationally known name for our school [Potomac River etc.] and represent VA as well as the other county schools yet we arent as budgeted as well as the other schools [to me, ie. Freedom or Hylton]. Just the renovation etcetera but I could say that it's improving. Thanks to Mr.Womack and the more 'popular' input to the school spirit. But anyways, our school should be able to budget agendas and such.
Test scores and 'star' ratings on websites do not give a real feel for a school. Potomac is a fine school. The front office, teachers, etc... have all been wonderful. Of course, some teachers are better than others but it's like that in every school, every state. We are a 'government' family who moves often and we've been pleased.
Apparently Potomac High School has gone through many changes over the years, but I can say that it is not riddled with as many problems as in the past. The staff is very caring. My daughter has had some emotional issues and her guidance counselor, social worker and some of her teachers have done an excellent job of accomodating all of her problems. The teachers ranged from very good to uncaring. The worst that I have seen is teachers who just do not put forth any extra effort when asked to. The worst thing that my daughter has reported to me is that it suffers from a lack of accomodations that has resulted in some of the class rooms beeing divided in half by fake walls that allow them to hear the other class. There is adequate security. There is new principal this year, so I am unsure of any changes.
The teachers at Potomac do all in their power to aid any and all students in the classroom. Like any school, there are students unwilling to learn, but most teenagers are unwilling to bathe most days! I have never seen such devoted and dedicated educators at any other school. Potomac leads the pack!
As a former student of this school I would have to say that I totally disagree with the above comment. The teachers at this school are very caring and willing to go the extra mile for students who care about thier education. This goes for the administration as well. Throughout high school I attended vocational programs at other schools within the county and could not find caring teachers such as the ones at Potomac.
I think this school has many problems. The bathrooms are unsanitary and the locker system isn't appropiate for the schools size. The school is so gloomy and needs to be renavated. The students here don't care about education and want to play around all the time. Teacher struggle to teach kids things because of the behavior.
This is the worst school I have ever encountered. The classes are full of students who do not want to learn so the teacher spends the entire class trying to get them to stop talking. The guidance department is unhelpful and does not make an effort to help new students and would not even take the time to show my daughter around. The teens there simply do not care about school and could be a bad influence on students who are interested in learning. I would strongly recommend doing whatever is possible to take your child out of this school as I did with my daughter. The scores are extremley low in this school and it is not a good learning enviroment for anyone.
This school is the jewel of Prince William County. Small class sizes, advanced classes and truly caring teachers make this the best kept secret in the county. Having a student who graduated in 2004 and a freshman entering this year, I am overjoyed that this school is here.
