I have had a great experience with this school. My daughter has loved going to school and the teachers are great. I think there could be more enrichment/after school activities but overall a good school.
My kindergartener is having a great experience his first year at Smith Station. It helps that he was very well prepared by an excellent preschool program. His current teacher is superb. My other son, who is in 2nd grade, is having a less enjoyable year. He detests the numerous worksheets that he has to work on at school, and dislikes the homework. I think it is time for Smith Station to revisit its homework policy. It is far from certain that homework is beneficial at the elementary school level, and some students have much more of it to do than others, depending on their teacher. I'd rather my son read for pleasure, or play outside. I regret that he does not have PE every day, as he could really use the physical outlet.
My child has been very fortunate to attend SSES for all 6 of her elementary years. The amount of individual attention that has been given to her learning needs is indeed a reflection on the quality of instruction that is expected on all levels of this staff. The principals support high instructional goals and learning is integrated throughout the day with projects, practice and technology. Homework has been a reflection of what is being taught in the classrooms and is vital to the program of instruction. Needless to say, my daughter has been extremely fortunate to be able to attend this school and will surely miss the attention and dedication of this staff to her education. We only hope this continues at the next level of her education.
I have two kids attending this school. I have been very pleased with the education they receive. Students have art, music, spanish, computer lab, and PE each week. The PTA is super, and has fundraisers that don't involve kids selling items. The school has an active guidance counselor, an onsite nurse, a large library with helpful librarians, and para-professionals who assist teachers as needed. The food quality is good and my kids want to buy lunch at least three days a week. The office staff is helpful, the principal and assistant principal are wonderful. There is onsite before and after school care provided through the Champions Program. I highly recommend Smith Station Elementary School.
We have moved out of this district but my son was in this school for 3 years and had fabulous teachers. We were very happy with his class room size and the experience here. He learned to love reading and still is loving it.
