Both my kids kindergarten teachers were amazing. I thought there was no way a teacher could be better than my son's kindergarten teacher who was retiring that year. But two years later my daughter went to kinder and got the replacement teacher, Mrs. Drake, who was the most attentive teacher. She used positive reinforcement to change my daughters behavior, who her pre-school teachers had been trying to but never succeeded. I was amazed at how much attention she gave my daughter but then I was even more amazed when I discovered that she had been doing the same for other students as well. All the parents I talk to only have good things to say about this school. I've never heard of any bullying issues, and the kids are academically challenged. Both my kids enjoy going to school each day because they like their classmates and their teachers.

Great school with excellent before/after school activities. Many programs offered. Some of them are Math Olympiad, Science Olympiad, Science Fair, Science Place, Chess, Odyssey of Mind, Lego League, after-school sports etc. Excellent mix of academic and non-academic activities. Great PTA. Nice enthusiastic teachers. The area and families feeding into this school are outstanding.

We moved to Herndon area last year and have been more than pleased with Floris school. Overall Fairfax county's curriculum itself is pretty solid. On top of that, the teachers that my kids have got so far have just been amazing!! The principal Ms. Porter is a very nice person to deal with and takes lot of interest in the school's activities. Every report card is personally signed by her with encouraging comments along with remarks for areas of improvement! I could not have been happier as they have great extracurricular activities like chess, science programs, Math Olympaid at such a large scale that, unlike other schools, almost no child is denied registration due to space issues. Moreover, the fees for these programs are also very reasonable. I would definitely recommend parents to consider this school as even the community has parents who are quite serious about academic achievements of their kids.

My kids went here for just a short time in 1999-2000. My son was in second grade, he was later diagnosed with asperger's syndrome. The teacher kept saying he wasn't writing his paragraphs. It turns out he couldn't even write a sentence let alone a paragraph. She would never let him eat his snack like the other children because he didn't do his work. I can't tell you how angry that makes me.

I love Floris. It is an excellent school with a very good school community. My experience with the teachers K-3 has been very good. The teachers were very attentive, responsive and the communication through BlackBoard is impressive. My son loves the school and refused to move to Oak Hill. Overall a A+.

I have one student who completed six years at Floris and another student curently attending. I have been very happy with all the teachers except the sixth grade. Parent/teacher interaction from the six grade teachers is almost non-existent. I found teacher conferences with the sixth grade teachers rudely cut-off even though I still had time left in my fifteen minutes. All other teachers in the other grades have been exceptional and have gone out of their way to work with the parents with very open communication. The principal and assistant principal are minimally effective and teachers have expressed frustation to me about them.

This is my son's first year of school and he does not enjoy going to Floris. His teacher is less than friendly. I would not recommend this school to anyone whose child does not have skin as thick as an adult's. I will be moving out of the Floris district so my son will no longer have to attend this school. After all the hype and great ratings this school definately falls short.

I happen to move in the area so that my kids can join this school. Teachers do not care to respond to students concern. Whenever i tried to have any conference with the teacher i get response that it is not needed at this time.

This is a great school. Principal is excellent and cares about the students. Teachers are also very good. Unnecessary acadamic pressure is not put on kids and kids enjoy going to school. On the other hand, kids who want to advance academically are given enough opportunities. This school has all levels of GT services. The school test scores are consistently high. It's a great place to start schooling. For me, it has been a very positive experience at Floris.

Floris is mediocre at best. While the administration is fine, the teacher quality is really lacking. You can tell that the teachers don't want to be here. A lot of the classrooms lack resources and are 'left to dry.' There are almost no extracurricular activites when compared to near by schools and other counties. Long and short teachers really don't care. Floris is definately lacking a is severly overrated.

I have a child who attends Floris who is special needs and has emotional/behavior issues. They whole staff is very supportive and listens to my concerns, the teachers even send me an email if there is any concerns or problems to be addressed. They have wonderful special needs classrooms and the homeroom teachers are caring to my child's needs. 2 years ago I moved all the way across town just so my child can be placed into their program for special needs.

Our 1st grade child loves school and is having a great experience at Floris Elementary. Her first grade teacher is excellent. In addition, the principal is very involved and sets strong academic goals in a fun, supportive setting for the kids. When you go into the school, you see lots of art work and projects by the kids on the walls. The PTA and parents are very involved with the school. Floris expects a lot out of the students and gives them the support and encouragement to have fun and learn. Great place to have your kid start public school. Hopefully, they will be able to keep the class sizes down (24 in a first grade class now, which is fine). Lots of home building is going on in the area . . .

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
