I attended Shepherd a long time ago, I have had one child graduate and two currently attending. No school is perfect but looking at other public school options in the city, I am happy with Shepherd. They could use some improvement but who does not need to improve. With the jobs and resources that the parents at Shepherd have, we could be better but you can't complain unless you have done all you can to help. We have a partially newly renovated building with plans to continue into next year. We have new energetic teachers with great ideas and ready to implement them. There has been a decline but things are changing for the better and are on there way back up if you don't believe me look at the scores. The statistics speak for themselves!

Shepherd school was an excellent school until all of the outstanding teachers left last year, total of five teachers leaving all at the same time. this to me points fingers at the way the principal manages her staff. Some changes need to be made, in order to bring this school in good standing like it use to be.

My school is a great overall school especially the specialty subjects. It has a great art, language, and music program that truly works with the core subjects taught in the IB method.

Shepherd Elementary has progressively declined over the years. My child has attended the school for 5 years. Instruction from teachers is severely lacking leaving parents to reteach fundamentals of math and language arts at home. Instruction is often replaced by websites meant to be a supplement such as "First in Math". Often times some of the newer teachers are dismissive of parents concerns which ultimately must be funneled to the principle who at this time is bombarded by complaints, yet no changes have been seen. Longevity of teaching staff has been a significant issue at the school. Many of the academic issues could be addressed by utilizing online resources properly such as posting homework assignments online, instead of steering students to video game type learning tools in lieu of classroom instruction. I can say that Music, Art, and Gym instruction are on track for this school.

Shepherd tries very hard but is a bit overwhelmed with trying to be an IB school.Academics are average at best. I was not impressed with teacher my child had. She had no up to date training and was not interested n teaching the whole child. The PTA is overwhelmingly the best thing about the school however if you dont live in the neihborhood you are kind of an outcast. Also if your child is new and you have not been a part of the school since Pre K you an outsider. It is in a very nice area of Washington DC and therefore gets credit that it doesnt deserve. The star average says it all.

My son entered Shepherd last year as a new PK student. As my wife and I were new to the District, we had out concerns with public education in the city. We went to several DCPS open houses, and felt very comfortable with the Shepherd community. Not only has our son's want for academic success grown, but our family feels enriched by the caring environment. As a father, I am pleased with the leadership and the school's direction.

Shepherd is a wonderful school, on its way to becoming even better. A lot of the concerns I heard a few years ago, seem to have been--or are being--addressed. Shepherd is now officially an IB school. I love hearing the children say good morning in three different languages during morning assembly. The program is rich and diverse; the community is warm and caring. The school is not perfect and there are a few individual teachers that I feel aren't as good as they could be; but overall, I'm very happy to have my child there.

So many dedicated individuals, some who have been at the school for years. Kindergarten teachers (the ones I know best) are terrific. Great new principal. Diverse classroom, which I value a great deal. Involved PTA. Lovely neighborhood.

Shepherd is a neighborhood school, where children can walk to school, where the school is surrounded by the community it serves. Whether one has children at the school or not it serves as a focal point for our neighborhood.

I love the care and concern for the children displayed by the teachers, assistants and staff. The fact that they know the children by name and usually recognize the parents/grandparents gives me a sense of security. I feel the children are receiving an excellent education and foundation for the future, just as I did when my oldest daughter, who is now 36 years old, was a student there.

Shepherd Elementary has a staff that truly cares about its students. Furthermore, many of the Shepherd families are from Shepherd Park, which makes for more of a community-feel in the school. I have been a Shepherd parent since 2005 and I have no complaints! The students learn a lot and they have fun doing it. My daughter started Pre-K at Shepherd last year and began learning to read and my son has always tested either advanced or proficient in both reading and math since he started DC BAS/DC CAS testing.

Shepherd Elementary is one of the most outstanding elementary schools in the Washington, DC area. I have a daughter that attends the school and she simply loves it. The school offers so much for the kids to learn and interact with one another. My daughter simply loves her 4th grade teacher. She comments all the time how fast the school day goes by, because her instructor makes learning so fun and interesting. Not to mention the dedication and involvement that the parents have in the school. I am so pleased with the progress and the education that my daughter is receiving at Shepherd. KUDOS to this school and all the people that make it possible for our children to learn in a wonderful environment.

My son is in his third year at SES, so far his teachers have been outstanding. They always seem to have insight into my child that lets me know they really understand who he is and can therefore teach to his strengths. The language instruction and IB curriculum are both huge bonuses and rare inside DCPS.

My niece attends Shepherd Elementary. She compliments her teacher all the time, and expresses how her teacher makes learning so easy! She has never once complained about being bullied, unfair treatment of students, or the school's atmosphere. She feels that the school is a safehaven for all the students who attend. When my niece is happy, everyone in her household is pleased. I commend Shepherd on its sustained achievements, but am not surprised to know that Shepherd has been nominated as a school of distinction. Go Shepherd Elementary!!!

People talk about the committed, dedicated families, but the mass exodus to charter schools continues. Families seem to be very vocal and committed for a year or two, but then they leave and take their commitment elsewhere.

The advantage of going to a school like Shepherd is having a dedicated Principal, loyal teachers, and an involved parent body. This translates into well educated well adjusted children. The philosophy there is truly that it takes a village to raise a child. If there was one criticism, it would be that Shepherd altered its cirriculum over a few years. While the goal was and is to be an IB school with language available, there was the challenge of intergrating the IB cirriculum with DC requirements. Those hurdles have since been addressed, and it now has a workable mission that all interested parties--teaches, staff, children and parents can follow.

I'd probably never find complete contentment anywhere in terms of my child's education, but she's thriving at Shepherd. She had a tremendous teacher her first year, and an even better teacher this year. I'm glad my neighborhood school offers instruction in a second language -- a choice of Spanish or French -- and is on track to toward submitting an International Baccalaureate certification application in December. Those are the things you look for in charter or private schools, and it's avaialble to our family in-boundary. I wasn't happy about the principal's sacking in October, but the new principal has wangled funds from DCPS for the Saturday Academy with both test prep and language components this winter, and a summer entrichment program that includes language. Too many parents treat schools like vending machines: Tax money goes in, model citizen pops out at graduation. Not so. It requires an authentic parental investment.

I have completed my first year at Shepherd and while the year started off Rocky, wee have ended with a bang! The new windows were completed in November. The New Principal Jamie Miles is a stronger leader and has really made a difference at the school. The kids seem to really love her. From January to April Shepherd had a Saturday Language Academy for students from Pre-K to 3rd Grade, that was was well attended. My daughter loves to go to school and she enjoys learning. I would highly recommend Shepherd Elementary.

My children have attended Shepherd for 5 years. I typically don't assign value to these websites because I think the only way that you can adequately assess a school is to perform a site visit. I felt the need to comment however because the crux of these ratings are negative. Having been an involved parent for the time that my children have attended, I have witnessed multiple changes in leadership, attempted changes in curriculum, and overall malaise of parents who attend for 1-2 years, contribute nothing but angst, and then leave harboring negativity. Through it all, Shepherd teachers continue to teach high quality education, our students maintain high performance on DCCAS (Top 10% of the District), and those parents who do stay are loyal and committed to the school because we believe in its mission. It has its problems, but the kids perform and appear happy.

Shepherd is a lot better than most District schools, and does have a lot to offer academically. The music program is great, and the budding language program has a lot of potential. There is a lot of parent involvement, and more and more of the students are from the neighborhood. On the downside, the school building is old and needs many renovations, and the same could be said about several of the teachers and staff. Other areas of the curriculum seem to be neglected, like Physical Education. Many of the programs that Shepherd has are due mainly to parent involvment, as the DC government does not have the funds or talent to provide for all the needs. Overall it is a great school for DC, but only an average school compared to the rest of the country.

As a parent of a 3rd grader I am please with the work that is being attempted. I think Shepherd has tried to achieve too much in this transient year. The new IB program was not well throughout for implementation and training and discussion was not had on a consistent basis with teachers or parents. Teachers seem to be unhappy and it is showing in the class rooms and the level of education that Shepherd has a reputation for. Principal feedback is slow if any on progress to staff and parents and again the children are suffering. Discipline has increased at an alarming rate due to the high percentage of out of boundary children. Resources have not been allocated for dealing with curriculum changes, staff changes , student body changes, etc.

As the parent of 5th and 3rd graders our overall experience at Shepherd has been nothing but positive on all grade levels. While D.C. public schools have often been much maligned, the combination of disciplined students, parental involvement, and dedicated administration and teachers has increasingly pushed Shepherd into the top tier of public elementary schools. My primary concern would be that the central administration continues to ignore (or at least put off) Shepherd's physical plant needs. There is a common misperception that the quality of teaching declines after 3rd grade. My belief is that the level of parental involvement and discipline is what is lacking, not teaching ability and dedication. Parental support needs to be and should be even greater at these grade levels.
