My child is not a student here as of yet, but I pray he gets in. He has attended during the summer and I love the school. There is a pleasant atmosphere, the children and staff from Beers are respectable and well mannered.

Beers has the NASA Program, it is a STEM School, they are a SAM school, how great is that! The teachers really care and work hard to make sure that the children get it. The best part is that many of the staff have had their own children at Beers, what a testiment. They have a great principal finally.

Anne Beers is a magnificient school. The principal and teachers work hard. The teachers all work together. Anne Beers is a family school. They even have community people who volunteer in the school. All of this good stuff is because of the new principal that we got in 2006. The building is much nicer and the staff work hard. They really care about the children and push them hard. Now maybe Beers will get back to where it use to be.

There are no current activities for the musically inclined student. My experiences with Beers Elem. have been horrible. The kids are rude and bullies. They have a tendency to disrespect each other and continuously 'assault' each other. I have two children attending this school and the coaches for the cheerleaders, has 'accidently' forgot to bring my children to me. Basically, my oldest child was left at an Elementary School in Washington, DC without supervision. Imagine that! What type of staff does this principal hire or allow to volunteer. Are the children really safe at Anne Beers? Does the staff really care about these kids? Or are they just doing enough to get their paychecks? The principal doesn't return phone calls, doesn't follow-up for scheduled appointments, and in the time of crisis - he ignores the parents needs and feelings. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS SCHOOL!

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Washington, D.C. used the District of Columbia Comprehensive Assessment System (DC-CAS) to test students in reading and math in grades 3 through 8 and 10, and science in grades 5, 8, and High School. The DC-CAS is a standards-based testing program, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the District of Columbia. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Rating legend
Below

Average
Above
average

Our rating (from 1 to 10) reflects a school's overall performance. The higher the rating, the more likely the school will prepare your child for the future, so choose an above-average school (8-10) if possible. For average schools (4-7), do careful research and look for evidence that the school has high-quality programs. For below-average schools (1-3), take caution; a low-performing school may not provide the instruction or environment your child needs to learn, and you may need to supplement classroom lessons at home.

Academic rating

The academic rating is made up of equally-weighted parts: students' test scores, their academic growth and their readiness for college (for high schools). If a school is designated low performing (Tier 3) by the DC Public Charter School Board, the school receives a "Below average" GreatSchools Rating. The graphs below compare this school's results to other schools in the city.

More from this school
  • Anne Beers is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Catalyst School, only one of 6 in the District. Beers holds 3 STEM events during the school year which highlight student learning and showcases our STEM partners such as Georgetown University, Children's National Hospital, District Department of Environment (DDOE), The University of the District of Columbia (UDC), Drinker Biddle Law Firm, Walmart, The Air and Space Museum and NASA, to name a few. Parental participation during our STEM events is phenomenal. Beers received a visit from the Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan to learn more about our School Wide Application Model (SAM), which ensures that all resources and supports serve all students. Staff members have children who currently or have in the past attended Anne Beers. We have staff members who as children themselves attended Beers. Our staff turnover is extremely low and retention is very high, providing stability for students and families. Anne Beers has established multiple partnerships which support our students and staff. Anne Beers has a large early childhood program for students ages 3 years and up. Enrollment at Beers has steadily increased and currently serves 412 students which is up from 318 (2006). Anne Beers is an ADA compliant facility and is mostly accessible to persons with disabilities. Anne Beers is a student friendly family oriented community school where students are not only taught to respect and appreciate themselves but also to embrace the diversity of others. Beers promotes literacy growth and development through numerous literacy events such as Family Literacy Night and Summer Reading Kick-Off Event where students and family members had the opportunity to receive free reading materials as well as information on ways they could continue to promote literacy during the summer months. Students and their families help to maintain our school garden and reap the benefits of eating fresh healthy herbs and vegetables. Teaming, collaboration and a great school culture are essential to our learning community.
