In response to the previous negative parent remark...I don't know which teachers you are referring too- my child has had an excellent experience at HMMS. The teachers are motivated, caring and willing to aid a student at any moment. My son has had an excellent experience and cannot wait for 7th grade. His math teacher was challenging, but excellent! He loved her and sees math differently now. Horace Mann is the best school in the county- hands down!

It is absolutely awful. The teachers are uninterested and unmotivated. The kids are treated rudely and the level of education is completely unsatisfactory.

Great start to another successful year at Horace Mann Middle School. The new principal made a very good first impression on students and teachers. I am so happy with the teachers commitment to making this an excellent learning environment for our kids. Academic achievements of the kids are great and the music program is outstanding!

This is a pretty good school actually! HMMS is very well rounded in academics, athletics, and music. The principal has high standards and leads an excellent school.

I think this is an excellent school. Any time I need a teacher, they return my calls and are alwayspolite and professional. The principal and assistant are excellent--they are strong leaders who demand excellence. I can think of no other school that is so devoted to academics, the arts, the community and athletics. All students are treated with respect regardless of who they are. I love HMMS!

I am Georgi Rader, the Honor Society president of 2010, and I believe that HMMS is most certainly a fine school! Although the rule of No zip ups is a tad bit strict, the other simple rules are very easy to obey! Dr. Blackwell and Mr. Stowers stand outside to give you a handshake every morning and also ask how you are doing! It is the best start to a very positive school day! I will now now answer the criteria of a great school on the right, HMMS has exellent staff, all with a very positive attitude! I will say we are a very disciplined school, which shows strong leadership! Our academic scores- SRI, Westest, scores are very high! We are challenged everyday and that is exactly what we need!

Very poor principal who demonstrates dictatorial attitudes and non responsiveness to student safety issues. If you like a martinet, and don't care about your student's well being then choose this school, otherwise move on....very quickly.

I am extremely disappointed with Horace Mann Middle School. There are a few fine teachers at HMMS who do a good job, but the bad teachers greatly outweigh whatever positive impression is made. All any parent has to do is look at the quality of writing displayed by the students who have commented here to know that spelling, grammar, punctuation and organization of thought are not given much attention at Horace Mann. Principal Blackwell seems to be more concerned with students feeling good about themselves than actually having them learn something and have a reason to feel good about themselves. Grade inflation is rampant, so that students think they are doing great even when they are not learning anything. They are being set up for failure. Overall, a pretty sad situation.

This is to some of negative remarks about horace mann, we as parents can't expect the schools to raise our children. We raise them at home, and send them to school to learn. And the teachers @ horace mann will help out, if asked. Its one the best middle schools in the whole kanawha valley, so thank god our kids has a safe learning place to go.

I love HMMS! This was my first and last year at hmms. I transfered from Charleston catholic which was the best decision i have ever made. The kids their are spoiled and their parents do everything for them. People are way to quick to judge horace mann kids just because it is and inner city school. The teachers at hmms are sometimes unfair but thats ok. But i love horace mann!!

I am soooooo impressed with HMMS!! I heard great things about the school, but once I got there, it was even better. The school has a real dedication to literacy and creativity that I haven't seen at other schools. The teachers are friendly and he kids were respectful. Both the principal and the assistant were super friendly and very helpful. I am happy to have someone in this school!

Not to be against any of the students but I was disgusted by the kids. THe boys would be in the back drawing nasty pictures and doing and speaking rude, dirty, and nadty thoughts. 3 girls there got pregnant in gym class.

I love HMMS! I just started my 8th grade year, and I am disappointed to be leaving it next year. We have awesome extracurricular activities, and the BEST music groups in the tri-state area, and in 2005 the strings orchestra won 2nd place in a national competition. The teachers and staff are caring, and help as much as possible. Mr. Blackwell and Mr. Stowers stand outside every day to greet everyone as the walking with a 'Good morning!' and a firm handshake.I am extremely proud to be part of this school and the award winning orchestra.

I just recently completed my 6th grade year at HMMS. Most of the teachers are caring, but the students have a lot of issues. A lot of the teachers treat us all like criminals, like we have once been in jail, they dont even give us a change in that department. The 6th grade math teacher is excellent, and I loved her class, she was surprisingly my favorite teachers, if you get negative feedback on her from your child, they obviously don't go to school for the right reasons, or are overly sensitive, she just doesn't put up with any crap. Its an ok school, but im transferring this year to go to JAMS, the kids at Horace Mann really disrupt my learning and get me into trouble.

HMMS is one of the best middle schools around. Mr. Blackwell knows all of the children and he or a teacher representing him shakes the hand of every child as they enter the building in the morning. He attends every extra curricular activity he can. The chorus recently came back at 1:00 a.m. and he was there to greet and congratulate them on a first place win in Ohio. The academic program at this school is one of the best I have seen. The only problem I can point out is that some of the teachers don't take the extra time that it sometimes requires to help students that don't completely understand things. Overall this is a wonderful school and I am very pleased my daughter attends HMMS.

My son recently entered Horace Mann Middle School from another school and I have nothing but positive comments. He has been academically challenged and been given large amounts of positive reinforcement to continue to do so. I am very pleased with the amount of discipline and respect the students are required to show towards the teachers, staff, and each other. Mr. Blackwell is very impressive with his involvement with the students directly. I have no doubt when I speak with him that he knows my child and what he is doing in the school. For an older school, I am very pleased with the facilities and equipment, such as computers, available to my son. The choices of extracurricular activities are extensive as well.

I was very displeased with the level of academics at Horace Mann. We moved here from out of state and after two years at the school my son's Stanford Testing scores dropped tremendously! I would definitely recommend HMMS seriously improving their academic program.

We were not sure we wanted our son to attend HMMS because of the reputation the school had when my younger sisters attended this school. We met with the administration and shared our concerns. We were educated about the recent changes that had taken place at the school as far as faculty and building improvements. Our son is now in his second year at HMMS and we could not be happier with the administration and faculty. HMMS has provided our son with a safe environment where teachers and administrators are involved with the students daily activities as well as extra curricular activities. This school is exceptional in a variety of different areas including athletics and performing arts programs. I would rate HMMS as an A+ middle school!

The overall school building has made so many good improvements over the past four or five years. It was amazing to see the difference it has made to the school. I like the office being at the front of the building and the library is really nice and has so many good books to choose from.

This has been a wonderful school for my child. We pulled her from another middle school in the valley where there was no leadership or involvement from the staff. Horace Mann's principal and staff attend all of the extra cirricular activities and are very supportive of their students. If you call to request an appointment with your child's team of teachers, they accomodate that request immediately. This school cares about their students.

There are no perfect middle schools as we all know and i can't speak for everyone, however, this was not the right choice for our child. This school has a poor reputation that continues to decline and will do so until there is new leadership and teachers that care about the success of the students.
