GBCS has an outstanding academic program. Approximately 50% of graduating seniors have qualified for the Promise Scholarship, which gives full tuition and fees for college. Only 12% of public school seniors qualify. In my daughter's class, there are a wide variety of ability levels. All of her teachers take a day each week to stay after school to work with individual students to give them the extra attention to help them succeed. The Christian worldview is why we send our child to GBCS.We appreciate the curriculum, standards, and the role models of the teachers and administration.
My two daughters graduated in 2000/2002 and received an education that prepared them very well for college. One daughter graduated from Liberty U in nursing and holds a position in a cardiac care unit in Columbia, SC. The other received a full academic scholarship to a private school in Virginia, graduated in two years with a bachelors and is now a pharmaceutical rep for Pfizer. They were involved in music, sports, bible quizzing, speech contests, missions trips, science fairs, student govt, and honor society. For a small school on a limited budget, there were many activities to participate in, mostly due to a dedicated staff and a host of parent volunteers.
My daughter attended Woodrow Wilson High School her freshman year and since transferring to Greater Beckley, she has improved her academic scores, gained quality friends, and is involved in 3 different sports. My greatest joy has come from the spiritual growth and committment to the Lord that I have seen in her in the past year. It is so nice for her to be receiving a good education and developing her desire to serve God at the same time. I would highly recomment this school to anyone who would want that to be a priority in their child's life.
GBCS isn't what it is cracked up to be. GBCS' teachers are well prepared for students and challenge the students in acedemics. On the other hand there is not a lot of programs for the students unless you are athletic or can read music. The rest of the students are left out of extra curricular activites just because they are not athletic or can't read music. The level of parental involvement is very high. This school offers a program called 'Helping Hands and Willing Hearts' for parents to volunteer during the school year.
