How you can help at home: In this preschool activity your child learns about families, draws a picture of her family and then tells about someone in the picture.

Have your child learn about families through discussion and books. Then have her draw a picture of your family and tell you about someone in the picture. This activity will develop language skills and help your child recognize that families are different.

What You’ll Need

Construction paper
Crayons
Books about family such as Who’s in a Family? by Robert Skutch and All Families Are Different by Sol Gordon.

Here’s How To Do It

Discuss with your child what a family is. Talk about who makes up your family. Ask your child about other families she knows, such as that of a close friend. Talk about how there are different kinds of families. For example, some have grandparents living with them and some don’t. Some have pets and some don’t. Read a book about families.

Ask your child to draw a picture of her own family members. Make sure she includes a drawing of herself. When she is done, invite your child to tell you about someone in the picture. You may need to ask questions to get her started. This will help her develop language skills which are important for communication as well as for reading.
