My review is a bit long, in the hopes it provides an honest opinion that is helpful to those evaluating this school for their kid(s).
My daughter started at this school for 2nd grade; prior to that she went to an LAUSD public school. It was a very HARD decision to switch her from reading the reviews about this and other KIPP schools. My biggest concern was how my daughter was going to handle the change. We were afraid the longer school hours and more strict curriculum would be a negative change for her.
Now that she is two months into the school year, we are glad we made the change. She has adjusted surprisingly well. There is definitely less play time since the school runs from 7:45AM - 4:10PM; take commute into account and you realize kids have much less free time. So far, we just have to be very efficient with time. It's a very crammed day, but we have been able to manage it so far.
School facilities: One thing we were concerned about as well was the actual school grounds. We had visited other (non-charter) schools and we liked the school and playground; the traditional feel of a typical school. If you feel the same concern, this is my take on it. The class-rooms are very clean, they have proper Air-Conditioning for those hot summer months, and kids have a dedicated play area. I no longer have any concerns about this and have no issues with the facilities.
On to the curriculum. We definitely noticed the difference since day one! I can tell my daughter is being challenged way more. Compared to her LAUSD years, she has more homework, and it's definitely more challenging. The tests are harder and require more studying for sure.
Some might think that this is pushing the kids too much. Well, I can tell you from my "student" experience. I always went to below average schools thru high school. When I went on to college, I struggled a lot because the courses were above my head. I strongly feel that schools like KIPP definitely help children be better prepared for College.
Is this a perfect school? NO! There is no such thing as a perfect school! Will your kid adapt? Even as parents, we may not know if our kid will adapt to a specific change. In the end, it is us as parents who have to make the best decision given the options available.
For us as a family, Kipp Comienza was a good choice. Good luck and wish you the best!
Great school!! Teachers help are super dedicated to the education they provide. The kids are advanced by a lot compared to public. Definitely recommend this school. .My son is in kindergarten and his teacher Mrs . palomino, what a teacher she loves all her students and makes sure Noone stays behind
I was excited to send my son here for kinder. I went to orientation and I was pleased with the school staff . But now I'm thinking of not sending him here since the school for kindergarten is at seville where this location used to be Halverson Luce mortuary years back. And it's across from a mortuary. I wish the location was else where. When I signed up I was under the impression classes where going to be at the Rita site, too bad there not. Guess I'm sending him to another charter school now.
Kipp Comienza Prep is the best Elementary School in L.A. They have the best Teachers, because they care for our children. Reading the previous comments, it's true that they are dedicated working very long hours, including weekends. My Son, had problems with Reading and they worked hard with him, in which now he is advance. If they see a weakness in your Child, they will work with him/her until they reach their goal. Yes, they work them hard because all kids should be challenge, because College is challenging, so they want to make sure they are ready; so what is wrong with that? If you are not happy with Kipp Comienza, you need to look at your own character traits.
