I also agree with the two other parents who said Mr. Curtis is very good for his boys. The girls, too. He really seems to care and goes the extra mile. As a parent, I am worried about the leadership of this school. The principal does not support her teachers and is very critical and hurts their efforts to help and teach the students.
As a new parent, I am impressed, My son came from a school that would give Joe Clark a run for the mone The entire staff cares, knows your child and will call you if needed for anything. I thoroughly agree with Mr.King about Mr. Curtis. An excellent teacher for male students. My son thought he could be charming, and get away with anything-not happening in this school. Mr. Curtis noticed he loved to read, and brought in books he took a interest in to encourage his reading beyond grade level.
I believe Ms. Higgenbottom is doing the best she can with the school, which is in my opinion about a 60 percent turn from where they were. I also believe she has an exellent staff. Especially Mr. Curtis who goes above and beyond his duty to educate Brenden Butler. Jerry C King
I graduated from Avalon Park with the class of 89' and back then we had decent structure and discipline. I don't know what has happened to our school and this generation of students but they aren't scared of anyone and they don't follow directions if they don't want to. I don't know where or when the situation went from good to bad to worse but it has been only one week since the new school year, new principal, and new school and Avalon has shown great improvement. It shows every time my kids come home and say 'the staff is acting mean, we can't do nothing' (translation-The ball is rolling in the right direction and now the school has some type of order).
A new Principal has been hired. It's just the third day of school but I can already see a difference. For the first time in years the hallways were clear of children during school hours. It's starting to look like the school I attended years ago. Looking forward to the change and the new leadership!
As a parent I would not recommend this school to anyone. If you can put your child in another school close by do so. They don't have control over the students and the staff complains a lot instead of trying to figure out a solution to the problems. I have one child graduating this year and two others attending. They are slow sending out reports about your child grades/follow up. I constantly have to make visit to find out what's going on, they never on time and don't have accurate information. I had to call to find out about the graduation fees and dates. They are not organize and the Principal I believe don't care. They don't enforce the dress code until the end of the year. Students are constantly fighting, cursing, and doing what they want especially in the halls and playground! The school needs to be restructured with staff.
My daughter attends Avalon and last year was the worse of the worse. The teacher and her behavior in front of the students was just unacceptable. And I agree with the other lady when she noted that the principal runs away from all the issues and the reprimanding of her teachers. Some of the programs are good for the students its not all bad. But I am truly glad that she graduates this year and we can wash our hand of Avalon Park.
My daughter graduated from here, and she was very happy with the programs. I admire the teachers who have a lot of patience. The administrators are welcoming, and have a focus on curriculum. It's amazing how the teachers know all the students no matter what grade, and the parents connected to them. Parents are kept informed about goings-on at the school.
The principal lacks leadership skills and frequently runs away from being accountable for problems with faculty.
I am currently a student at Avalon Park! I will be going into the eighth grade this year! I would not recommend this school to any one especially if they are smart! This school has no discipline! I'm surprised its not closed down yet as bad as there tes scores are! Bu I been there since pre-k and I am very smart! I love my school but Im glad Im leaving next year!
